I have 6 mature foxy ladies and all but 2 are variegated. That is how you can tell the difference between foxtail and Foxy Lady hybrid. Note the smooth texture of the seed fiber compared to a course fiber foxtail. I do not grow foxtails, so there could not be a mix up there. I have plenty of foxtails and Veitchia arecina in the yard so maybe it did a cross back with one of them to become fertile? Yeah I had one sprout a while back but had some irrigation issues to my potted plants in my absence and it ended up drying out and dying.
Foxy lady seeding
Few foxy gold casino variegated fronds ….. There is a slight blonde strip but that why i asked is the green form Always green or does it have. Appears to be the green form. Never observed even hints of varigation on any of the solid green specimens i have seen in both FL.

Well mine has a sparse seed set that dropped today. If this one produces seed, you should be able to tell if they have a chance.. While the largest would flower & produce seed often, most seed i’d collect were empty or basically liquid when opened.
Foxy lady palm
When you germinated the seeds of the foxy lady and the foxtail did you plant them at the same time? Lots of people have been sold green ‘foxy lady’ palms in the past, that eventually turn out growing up into standard foxtails. These foxy lady palms are thirsty and it’s nearly impossible to overwater them. The foxtails are the ones in community pots, and foxyladies are singles in 1 gal. It PROVES that it is a true foxy lady,as foxtails are almost never variegated. I’ve got several foxtails (probably too many, but it was the first “exotic” tree that I really liked), some common King palms, and some Kentias.
If you do the 24hr soak thing, put a weak solution of seaweed extract in the water too. This would happen far more quickly for you than it does for those of us in the humid tropics where the plant tissues survive on atmospheric moisture for ages before the final collapse. Do you have a FULL shade spot under some trees or overhang? I used a 4 foot bamboo stick I bought at Home Depot and tied it to the broken leaf. Mine’s established and I still water it almost daily. Secondly, drought tolerance is typically referring to in ground established plants.
I wonder if the very elongated seed has more Veitchia traits and the more rounded F2 seed has the foxtail traits? Typically I find the F1 does have the hybrid vigor, except when they are very variegated. Only the variegated FL produced viable seed so far, but none of the seedlings are variegated.

Time will tell with my original plant… I’m encouraged to see some growth of the spear, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. So after a couple weeks of treatment, the remaining leaves are browning but I have noticed some minimal growth (a couple millimeters) of the spear.
Never noticed seed on the variegated Foxy located in another part of the collection. @96720 Taking a look at your foxy lady in the pic. - I think it’s better classifies as mostly green or mostly variegated that’s my conclusion
- Plus, we especially appreciated the fast loading times and general theme of the casino.
- I was advised by the seller to apply a kelp extract/ water mix, then heavy water every other day, with superthrive/ water every five days.
- Actually, light variegation is not a bad thing.
- Both are superbly grown, just needs to planted to adapt to So Cal conditions and watering.
- If this one produces seed, you should be able to tell if they have a chance..
- The over variegated ones seem to languish and slowly die or just grow very slow, probably due to lack of chlorophyll.

This is a holy grail palm for many of us PTers. Going to a spot in the Los Angeles area If you know anyone looking who would make a good palm parent send em my way. It’s in a 15 gal but it ideally should go in the ground soon, it’s filled in that pot already. Alas, the time has come. Hot and dry in summer, humid and sticky monsoon season, perfect weather Christmas time
- There’s been a couple times where large all green forms have been available, but it hasn’t been too often.
- Was it grown from a seed made by nature or by manual cross pollination?
- @here does anyone have Foxy Lady seed they would like to sell?
- It’s a bad combination for the palm to deal with root trauma and to fight full scorching sun at the same time.

The seeds that Mike Evans germinated were F2, there is no guarantee they will be Wodveitchias. Pretty sure they keep their variegation, at this stage we can already see the difference between the variegated lot and the greenies. The foxtails have been grown in some shade, and the foxyladies have been growing in at least 1/2 day Sun. I had about 7 seeds so I just planted them all, one popped.
It never ceases to amaze me how little water rootbound palms in pots get, even if you soak them everyday. Call me anytime to chat about transplanting palms. They say the foxy lady is a rocket but the growth rate appears to be the same as seedlings. Seed from a foxtail palm will only look like foxtail seeds even if something else is going in the seed.
F1 hybrids tend to be more consistent, and I guess this is why what we know as a foxy lady (F1) has its signature look. Is there any way to tell if seeds are hybridized by looking at them as they develop? My big green one enjoys full sun however and is the fastest growing palm in my landscape and I have hundreds of palms in the ground.
